About Max
Max Maxfield was elected Wyoming Secretary of State in 2006. As Secretary of State, he also serves in the capacity of Lieutenant Governor.
Secretary Maxfield’s career in public service has spanned nonprofit, public, and private sectors. He directed nonprofit organizations for 23 years. Then, he directed two cabinet level State departments: the Wyoming Recreation Commission (1987-1989) and the Wyoming Department of Commerce (1989-1994). He also served as Wyoming’s 18th elected State Auditor (1999-2007).
Secretary Maxfield is a member of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and the National Lieutenant Governor’s Association (NLGA). He is chairman of the NASS Securities Committee and serves on its National Task Force on the Formation of Business Entities.
As Secretary of State, Maxfield serves on the State Loan and Investment Board, the State Building Commission, and the Board of Land Commissioners. He is also chairman of the State Elections Canvassing Board.
Maxfield is a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, a Hospice Board member, and a member of the Cheyenne Animal Shelter Board of Directors.
Max believes in “giving back” and has an extensive history as an active community volunteer. He has served as President of Laramie County United Way, Crime Stoppers, Blue Envelope Health Fund, and the Wyoming Alzheimer’s Association. He has also served as a board member of the Wyoming Congressional Youth Awards, Special Olympics, Wyoming Children’s Society, and the High Desert Riders.
Maxfield is a member of the First United Methodist Church, Cheyenne. He is a certified lay leader and a Stephen Minister.
Max and his wife, Gayla, a Clinical Social Worker at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, have four grown children and two grandchildren.
Maxfield's hobbies include spending time with his family, camping, traveling, and golfing (albeit poorly!).

The Secretary of State is an elected member of the Executive Branch of Wyoming's State Government. Elected every four years, the basic mission of the Secretary of State is to collect, secure, and make accessible a wide variety of public records, ensure the integrity of elections, and enhance commerce. The Secretary is the keeper of the Great Seal for Wyoming and is the owner of the famous Bucking Horse and Rider. He also serves as Acting Governor when the Governor is absent from the State. The Secretary of State is first in line to succeed the Governor in the event of death, resignation, removal from office, or permanent disability to discharge the duties of the office.
